The Grand Bend youngsters enjoyed the fun, active, and educational outdoor activities last year and they’re back to register this year. Showing them some of this year’s activities are Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority conservation education staff Denise Iszczuk (in hat) and Julie Stellingwerff. Parents started an e-mail campaign to bring back the day camps this year and ABCA brought them back by popular demand. Parents are starting to pre-register their own children and some local businesses are also choosing to sponsor children to attend.

The third annual Huron Arts & Heritage Network’s Culture Awards recognize the best in arts, culture and heritage in Huron County. Huron Arts & Heritage Network has developed the awards over the course of three years with a goal of raising the profile of our dynamic cultural communities and providing local individuals and organizations with well deserved recognition.

A total of five awards for 2011 will be presented in the following categories: Cultural Event/Organization, Individual Artist, Cultural Patron/Volunteer or Heritage Individual/Organization as well as Youth in Arts.  “I think these awards bring to light some of the many talented and hardworking individuals and organizations that contribute so much to the vitality of Huron County’s cultural sector” says Rick Sickinger, Huron County’s Cultural Services Officer “We are seeing that the community is supportive of  this initiative and nominations for all five categories are being submitted” he added.

The awards will be presented on the evening of Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the gala gathering at the Bayfield Town Hall.

Award winners will be profiled on Huron Arts & Heritage Network’s website and the winner in each category will be presented with an original piece of art created by Huron County blacksmith and artisan James Wallace of Sharp’s Creek Forge..

Huron Arts & Heritage Network encourages everyone in Huron County’s communities to send in their nominations for the awards.

The deadline for nominations is March 30, 2012 at 5:00 PM.

The Huron Perth Agriculture and Water Festival (HPAWF) committee has announced it will hold its second annual open house for the public following the success of last year’s event. Organizers say there will be new additions this year at the free open house event, which takes place Wednesday, April 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Seaforth and District Community Centre and Seaforth Agri-Plex at 122 Duke Street. The event features live farm animals, a giant mystery faucet display, active games related to water conservation, wildlife displays, and door prizes. A milking demonstration will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Seaforth Agri-Plex.  Admission to the open house is by donation of a non-perishable food item which will be donated to the Seaforth Food Bank.

About 600 students from Huron and Perth Counties are expected to attend the HPAWF during their school day April 11-12. This event has evolved from Slice of Huron, an agricultural festival that started in 1992. The open house allows the entire community to have a chance to experience what the students do during the day. “This year we have some exciting new exhibits and an opportunity for both youth and adults to win a prize,” said Jenni Boles, 2012 Festival Coordinator.  One particularly exciting addition to the open house this year is the Skills Opportunities Showcase (SOS) Trailer which will allow families to explore agriculture and the environment through fun and interactive computer games.

Participants will receive a ‘passport’ that can be stamped at the various activities and allow each person to enter the draw. “This is a great opportunity for families to enjoy a fun and active evening out while learning more about this fantastic region where we live,” said Boles.

The Huron Perth Agriculture and Water Festival is a free, fun, and educational event that provides students in Grades 3-5 with hands-on learning opportunities about agriculture and water, their importance in our local environment, and role in our everyday lives. Water activities deal with conservation and protection of our finite water resources. Agricultural activities profile various aspects of field crop and livestock production and being safe on the farm.  In addition, by coming to the open house you and your family will get a chance to meet the people who work in the agriculture or water related fields locally and these are the same people who make the activities interactive, educational, and entertaining for the students during the festival. Teachers attending also receive an HPAWF Teacher’s Guide with activities that can be used in the classroom prior to or following the festival.

 The HPAWF is organized and delivered by a committee of volunteers representing a number of community organizations that recognize the importance of agriculture, water, and the environment to Huron and Perth counties. The HPAWF committee knows that the festival could not be possible without the overwhelming commitment of the community and many sponsors across Huron and Perth. “We depend entirely on contributions from the community and without their support it could not happen,” said Denise Iszczuk, Co-Chair of the Committee and Educator for Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority.
