Museums & Attractions
catch a glimpse of everyday life in rural Huron County in this restored yellow-brick school house, S.S.#3 Ashfield. Former students have worked to preserve an important piece of the area’s history, restoring the building and re-creating a one-room classroom that was a centre of learning for as many as 60 students in a year.
Period desks, flags, photos, vintage readers and text books recall the days when Huron County children were taught here, from 1893 to 1954. Even the original strap is perched on the teacher’s desk. The Kintail Save the School Committee also operates a kitchen with good, country-style cooking, and runs a flea market chock full of treasures. A fundraising cookbook, Crumbs of Comfort, first produced by the Kintail Women’s Institute in 1954, holds a collection of favourite recipes.
